RBR’s Fiction Editor, Laura, loves The Idiot by Elif Batuman.

She read “The Idiot” for the first time a few months ago, then again in September, and then picked it up again last week Saturday. Needless to say, Laura can’t get enough of this book. Nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in 2018, this novel tells the story of a Harvard University freshman studying linguistics. She loves that a book can make her laugh out loud or make her view the world differently, and this coming-of-age story accomplished both. “The Idiot” captures what it’s like to be on the threshold of adulthood, when you are finding out the real world isn’t always as kind as you’d hoped and not everything has an answer. She thinks people of all ages would enjoy this book, but if you are a young person, this story will be extra special.
