How often do you publish?
We publish bi-annually.
The Summer Issue is published in August.
The Winter Issue is published in February.
We are open year-round for submissions and will consider submissions received between the deadlines for the for upcoming issues. Simultaneous submissions are encouraged!
When will we get back to you?
Due to the nature of literary journals and our small operation, receiving feedback can take some time but we do promise to provide feedback on all of your work. Submission feedback is typically between 3-6 months. Thank you for your understanding!
Do you accept international or non-English language submissions?
While we do accept international and non-English language submissions, we do require that you attach an English translation of your work if it is written in another language.
What if I’m not in school?
We aim to publish all young artists regardless of their extenuating circumstances.
What if my submission contains explicit language?
While we are addressing a younger audience, we do not want to censor your work.
If my work is 1-2 pages over the limit, can I still submit it?
Unfortunately, no, these guidelines are set up to help us read through and respond to your work in a timely manner. They are also there so that you learn the valuable skill of editing, re-editing, and editing again for clean, concise work.
What font size and type should I submit my work in?
Your submission should be in Times New Roman 12pt. (Please no wingdings).
Can I retract my work after it’s been published in Rare Byrd Review?
Unfortunately, Rare Byrd Review does not retract pieces once published.
Can I submit previously published work?
Rare Byrd Review only accepts previously unpublished work. We will not publish anything that has already been published.
However, we do allow multiple publications. That means that you, the author/artist, are allowed to submit the piece that you had published in Rare Byrd Review to other literary magazines for publication as well.
Does Rare Byrd Review allow simultaneous submissions?
Yes, we encourage simultaneous submissions. This means that we allow authors/artists to submit the same submission that they sent Rare Byrd Review to other literary magazines as well.
Please note: if your piece gets published by another literary magazine before it is published in Rare Byrd Review, you must update us and it will no longer be eligible for publication in Rare Byrd Review.
If my artwork has been featured in exhibitions before, can I still submit my work for publication to Rare Byrd Review?
Yes, we allow photography/artwork that’s been featured in exhibitions so long as it has not been previously published (such as in an arts magazine or journal).
Doyou accept book reviews?
Yes, we accept book reviews.
The guidelines for book reviews can be found under the “Submissions” tab.
